Cosmetic Dentistry: Tooth Replacement Options

Cosmetic Dentistry McLean, VA

There are multiple restorations used in cosmetic dentistry to replace missing teeth. Most people will lose at least one tooth over the course of their lives and that can ruin the way their smile looks. A missing tooth can also affect a person's ability to chew food or speak properly, which is another reason why to consider cosmetic dentistry options for replacement.

Teeth replacement options used in cosmetic dentistry

Outlined below are some of the restorations used in cosmetic dentistry to replace missing teeth.

1. Implants

Implants are highly recommended in cosmetic dentistry. These are artificial teeth roots that are surgically inserted into the patient's jaw. The implant helps to keep the patient's jawbone stimulated, preventing the bone tissue loss that often takes place when a person loses a tooth.

The installation of implants requires minor oral surgery, which requires patients to be healthy enough for that. Health conditions like immune system disorders and diabetes can slow down a person's rate of recovery while increasing their risk of complications.

Local anesthetics are typically used during the installation of implants as it prevents the patient from feeling pain during the procedure. A hole is drilled into the patient's jaw and the implant is pushed into the hole until the friction created by the tissues surrounding it is enough to keep the restoration in place. The implant is then given up to six months for osseointegration to take place. When that is completed, the implant is fitted with a crown or other restoration to complete the cosmetic dentistry tooth replacement process.

2. Bridges

These oral prosthetics are used to bridge the gap created by missing teeth. They are typically anchored to the two teeth closest to the gap, and some types can be anchored down to just one tooth.

The teeth used to anchor down bridges are called abutments. The abutments are usually covered with crowns to provide extra support and a better appearance. A custom set of artificial teeth called pontics are made for the patient. The dentist does this by taking an impression of the patient's teeth and sending it to a cosmetic dentistry lab where the crowns for the abutment and the pontics are made.

3. Dentures

Dentures are the most affordable way to go about replacing missing teeth. They have two main components, including the framework that rests on the gums and artificial teeth that are attached to the framework. The framework is held in place via suction. Dental adhesives can be used to provide extra stability.

The biggest drawback associated with dentures is the limited stability due to being only held in place by suction. That can be addressed with hybrid restorations like implant-supported dentures. These prosthetics are attached to implants, keeping them stable in the mouth.
